Laura Cantrell at the Old Market, Hove on Wednesday night. Dang, she was wonderful. That voice - why can't I have that voice?! If she sang the Alphabet Song from Sesame Street she'd infuse it with such emotion you'd feel longing and melancholy and joy all at once. Songs she's written, songs her friends had written and songs from the old timers of Country. Support Paul Burch joined her at the end to duet on Hank Williams' I Can’t Help It If I’m Still In Love With You.
Afterwards I got to chat with her briefly - begging her to perform Poor Side of Town next time - and she signed the poster I'd taken down from the wall. She was white as a sheet - paler than me, which is saying something. And her poor feet were bulging out of her shoes - I should have offered her a chair and a bowl of hot soapy water...
I went home with a reissued copy of her rare Hello EP and I've had it on repeat ever since. Cellar Door is a great flirtin' song:
'Honey I've been knocking on your cellar door
What will I find, when you swing it out wide?
A match in the dark and a spark in your heart...'
There's also a great cover of Lee Harvey Was A Friend Of Mine, with lyrics pointing at evidence that he was framed:
'Lee Harvey was a friend of mine
He used to take me fishing all the time
He used to throw the ball to me when I was just a kid
They say he shot the president but I don't think he did
I've seen them pictures of him with the family and a gun
Shadows were pointin' every-which-a-way, but only just one sun
Someone faked those photos; that's not the way it is
They say he shot the president; but I don't think he did...'
