From his travels, the Elf writes: "...a 'kris' is a kind of traditional knife they have in singapore, maybe here in malaysia too. just thought you'd like to know how your name is being used around the world. i'll be sure to report on any other findings i make..."
I'd seen some in the window of one of the antique shops in the Lanes. Am now thinking of insisting that everyone addresses me as 'Ceremonial Kris'.

'She had taught herself to sew, embroider, weave and knit because she had heard so many tales of young women… asked to do impossible tasks (to spin wheat into gold, for example) to buy their freedom.'

'And I cannot compete with you, Jolene...'
Watching TOTP2 last night I caught the video for Mindy Smith's cover of Dolly Parton's Jolene (in which the lady herself makes a cameo appearance). Now I've never particularly liked the song, but I was really moved by this new rendition, in combination with an brooding, atmospheric video which really emphasised the desperate pleading of the lyrics. Apparently this version is part of a new tribute album (the US release comes with appalling artwork which any 'fan art' site would blush at). The tracklisting looks a bit hit-and-miss, but I can't wait to hear Alison Krauss's version of 9-5, and anything Emmylou Harris sings just tears me in two in the best way.
